On September 9, 2015, Kent County announced the launch of Smart911 - an emergency response service which allows you to create a safety profile that can be seen by emergency responders when you call 9-1-1.
Smart911, a free, private, and secure service, allows citizens to create a Safety Profile at Smart911.com for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. Responders can be aware of many details they would not have known previously: fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing how many people live in the home and the location of bedrooms, EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions, and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than minutes or hours.
How Does Smart911 Work?
Smart911 allows citizens to provide the additional details that 9-1-1 call takers may need in order to assist them during an emergency. When you dial 9-1-1 today the information received by the 9-1-1 call center can be limited based on the type of phone you are calling on. With Smart911, anytime you make an emergency call from a phone registered with your Safety Profile, the 9-1-1 systems recognizes your phone number and automatically displays your profile on the screen of the call taker who receives your call.
At a time when you may be panicked, or unable to communicate, or it could be unsafe to communicate, Smart911 ensures that the details you would need to tell 9-1-1 are immediately available in the event you cannot verbally provide them. Smart911 is free, private and secure. Please review our Privacy Policy for further information.
Why Should I Sign Up for Smart911?
Today over 70% of calls made to 9-1-1 in the U.S. are made from mobile phones, and these mobile phones relay limited information about the caller. Unlike a landline, a mobile phone does not link directly to an address or include a caller’s name. 9-1-1 call takers are trained to ask specific questions to determine the location of the emergency, who is in need of assistance and other specific details in order to send the correct response teams, tot he correct location, quickly.
These questions can take time, and often during an emergency the caller may not be able to speak, or may be too panicked to effectively communication. When your Smart911 Safety Profile immediately appears to the call taker, the information you have provided can help the dispatcher obtain the information they need to help you quickly.
